This practice is mandatory and imperative to ensure that it is able to circulate on Portuguese roads, as stipulated in article 116 of the Highway Code

“Motor vehicles and their trailers may be subject, under the terms set out in regulations, to inspection for:

a) Approval of the respective model;

b) Assignment of registration;

c) Approval of changes in constructive or functional characteristics;

d) Periodic verification of its characteristics and security conditions;

e) Verification of the constructive or functional characteristics of the vehicle, after repair as a result of an accident; ”

Failure to comply with the legal duty results in a fine between € 250 and € 1250. Therefore, using popular sayings, if the objective is to avoid paying the inspection, “the amendment is worse than the sonnet”.

NEW PRICES TO TAKE THE CAR TO INSPECTION

This year, as usual, it was the responsibility of the direct council of the Institute for Mobility and Transport (IMT) to update the rates charged on inspections based on the most recent average annual inflation (total consumer prices without housing).

As the year 2020 is very atypical, due to the pandemic and the economic consequences of it, the IMT determined the changes based on the latest update by INE of the “Consumer Price Index”. This date of December 14, 2020 and refers to November 2020, when there was deflation and not inflation, estimated at minus 0.04%.

This means that the price of taking the car to inspection will go down, even if only cents, depending on the vehicle.

However, just the fact that there is no increase in values is already positive news for consumers who, in November, saw the inspections become more rigorous, such as the possibility of a car being failed if it is dirty and cleaning conditions impair inspection.

Thus, the price without VAT will drop in light cars from € 25.61 in 2020 to € 25.60 in 2021. This means, already with VAT (23%), that the inspection value will stop being € 31.50 and will start to be € 31,488.

In the case of heavy vehicles , the tax free fall is two cents. In other words, from 38.33 € to 38.31 €, which corresponds to a decrease in the total amount from 47.146 € to 47.12 € .

The inspection of motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, on the other hand, suffered a decrease of only one cent in the total value and now cost about 15.85 € .

The main differences occurred in terms of attribution and replacement of enrollment and extraordinary inspections, values that are normally higher and that, in the face of deflation, have undergone greater changes.
